What is Reflections?

Started in 1969 by the Colorado PTA President Mary Lou Anderson, Reflections has encouraged millions of students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. It is essentially an art contest.

As a local PTA with Active Status, the Stafford Middle School PTA is eligible to sponsor Reflections on our campus.

Students can submit their artistic creations for local, regional, state and national awards and prizes.

For more information, visit the Texas PTA Reflections site.

What can students submit?

Students may create and submit works of art in six categories:
  • Dance choreography
  • Film production
  • Literature
  • Musical composition
  • Photography
  • Visual arts
The theme for 2017 is “Within Reach” Each entry must be the original work of one student and created specifically for the Reflections program based on the national theme.

Students may enter the Reflections program in one or more arts categories with no limit to the amount of entries in a single category. See the Rules list for specifics of each category.

How is it judged?

The Reflections program recognizes students at the local, council/region, state and national PTA levels. At each level, all entries are judged on interpretation of the theme, creativity and artistic merit. The review criteria includes:

  • Interpretation: How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement
  • Creativity: How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation
  • Technique: The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area
Submissions are judged in divisions based on grade.

Who can participate?

The Reflections program is open to all Stafford students who have at least one person from their primary household as a current member of the Stafford Middle School PTA as of October 31, 2017. Make sure you join the PTA by that date. Membership is only $10.

How does a student submit?

Complete the Reflections Student Entry Form, and turn in the form and Reflections submission to the front office or art room no later than October 27, 2017.

In addition to the rule of creating an original work for this program based on the theme, each entry must conform to the Reflections guidelines developed by the National PTA.
